History of Phillips

Harry Phillips founded the auction house in 1796 in Westminster, London. Phillips gained international acclaim by selling paintings from Queen Marie Antoinette's estate and household items from Napoleon Bonaparte, and remains one of the auction houses to have held a sale inside Buckingham Palace. Harry Phillips was an innovator who mixed business acumen with showmanship, introducing elaborate pre-auction evening receptions – a standard application in today's auction business.

Ownership of the industry passed through Harry's son and successors through the late 1800s and early 1900s. In the 1970s, Phillips had expanded its category to sell fine art collections, furniture and plantations.

Bernard Arnault of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton bought the industry in 1999 and shortly thereafter joined leading private art dealers Simon de Pury and Daniela Luxembourg. This new team introduced the sale of watches, jewelry and designs along with Impressionist, American, Modern and Contemporary art. In 2002, Simon de Pury acquired a majority stake in the industry.

In 2008, most of the industry's shares were acquired by the owner of the elegant retail team, Mercury. In late 2012, the acquisition ended, and the business moved from Chelsea to 450 Park Avenue in New York. October 2014 marked the opening of its new London headquarters at 30 Berkeley Square in Mayfair.

In July 2014, Chief Executive Officer Edward Dolman joined Phillips after a 27-year career at Christies. Bringing a wealth of experience, Dolman attracted a highly qualified senior staff including Chairman Cheyenne Westphal, who joined the auction house in 2017. Shortly after the start of Dolman's tenure, Phillips held its first auction in Hong Kong in 2015, and is currently offering all kinds of include art, design, jewelry and watches in the fast-growing Asian market. Outside of Hong Kong, Phillips has regional representation and galleries in Jakarta, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo. In 2018, Phillips moved its headquarters in Asia to the St. The prestigious George in Hong Kong's arts district.

The industry launched Phillips in Association with Bacs& Russo in November 2014, which has become the global market leader for the best collector's watches at auction. Under the leadership of Aurel Bacs and Livia Russo, Phillips has many world auction records to his name. Also in recent years, Phillips has relaunched the Gem type with curated auctions, individual sales, and sales fairs throughout Hong Kong, New York and London.

Today, Phillips is the go-to destination for buyers and sellers of modern, postwar, contemporary, American and Latin American art beyond watches, jewelry, designs, drawings, works on paper and editions. In 2021, the New York branch of industry moved its headquarters to 432 Park Avenue.
